AC and DC current

The main differences between AC voltage and DC voltage are:

1. Nature of Current Flow

AC voltage:

The AC voltage current changes direction all the time. It goes one way for half of the time. Then it goes the other way for the other half.

DC voltage:

The DC voltage current goes in one direction only. It does not. Just keeps going in the same direction.

2. Waveform

-AC voltage:

The AC voltage waveform is usually a curve. It can also be a triangle or a square.

DC voltage:

The DC voltage is a line because it does not change over time.

3. Generation

AC voltage:

AC voltage is made by machines called alternators or by power plants that make AC voltage.

DC voltage:

DC voltage is made by things like batteries, special generators, solar cells and rectifiers.

4. Transmission

AC voltage:

It is better to send AC voltage over distances because we can use special machines to make the voltage stronger or weaker.

DC voltage:

It is not as good to send DC voltage over distances because it needs special equipment to change it.

5. Applications

AC voltage

We use AC voltage in our homes and in factories. Most things that use electricity are made to work with AC voltage.

DC voltage:

We use DC voltage in things like computers, cars that run on electricity and other things that need a voltage.

6. Conversion

AC voltage:

We can easily change the AC voltage to a voltage using special machines.

DC voltage:

We need electronic machines to change the DC voltage to a different voltage.

7. Safety

-AC voltage:

AC voltage can be very dangerous if it is too strong because it can hurt our muscles and heart.

DC voltage:

DC voltage is not as dangerous if it is not too strong. It can still hurt us if it is very strong.

These differences are important because they help us understand how to use AC voltage and DC voltage in electrical systems. AC voltage and DC voltage are used in ways and we need to know the differences, between AC voltage and DC voltage to use them correctly.
