A lead-acid battery has been around for a long time over 150 years. It is one of the types of batteries and is widely used. People know it best for its use in cars, backup power systems and energy storage for telecommunications and power grids.
Components of a lead-acid battery:
1. Plates (Electrodes):
Positive Plate:
Made of dioxide.
Negative Plate:
Made of lead.
These plates are put in a liquid that helps make electricity.
2. Electrolyte:
This is a mix of acid and water. It helps the plates work together to make electricity.
3. Separator:
This is a material that keeps the positive and negative plates apart. It stops them from touching and making a circuit.
4. Container:
This is usually made of plastic. Holds everything together. It is designed to be strong and not get damaged by the sulfuric acid.
How lead-acid batteries work:
When a lead-acid battery is used a chemical reaction happens between the plate and the sulfuric acid. This makes electricity. The negative plate also gets used in this process.
When a lead-acid battery is charged the electricity is used to reverse the chemical reaction. The plates get. The sulfuric acid gets stronger.
Types of lead-acid batteries:
1. Flooded lead-acid batteries:
These are the common type. The liquid inside can spill out. People need to check and fix these batteries regularly.
2. Sealed lead-acid batteries:
These batteries are closed. Do not need to be checked all the time. There are two kinds:
Absorbent Glass Mat batteries:
These use a glass mat to hold the liquid inside.
Gel batteries:
These have a gel inside that stops the liquid from spilling.
Uses for lead-acid batteries:
Car batteries:
These start the engine and power the cars systems.
Backup power systems:
These give power when the main power is out.
Telecommunications:
These give power to phone and internet systems.
Renewable energy systems:
These store energy made by wind power.
Industrial uses:
These power big machines like forklifts and submarines.
Good things about lead-acid batteries:
They are cheap.
They work well. Are reliable.
They can be recycled.
Things, about lead-acid batteries:
They are heavy.
They do not last long as some other types of batteries.
Some of them need to be checked and fixed regularly.
Lead-acid batteries are still widely used because they are cheap work well and can be recycled. This is true even though there are types of batteries.
